These are the two steps required to successfully use your BookSplits pack -
Step 1 – Split your book in two parts (see our video tutorial and step by step written instructions)
Step 2 – Apply the BookSplits Covers

IMPORTANT
Before cutting any books please make sure that they are suitable. Most school textbooks are formed using a series of ‘mini-booklets’, called signatures, which are bound and glued together along the spine.
Textbooks that are not bound in signatures WILL NOT WORK WELL with BookSplits.
Proceed once you have ensured that your books are suitable.

step 1 - HOW TO split your book
To split your book you will need:
  •  Your textbook
  • A Stanley knife/Craft knife
  • A scissors
  •  A cutting mat to protect the cutting surface (a thick newspaper will do)

Step 1. Find the half-way point of your book.

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP TO SUCCESSFULLY SPLIT YOUR BOOK

Step 2. Now find the nearest WHOLE signature. Do not cut in the middle of a signature – only cut when you have located a point BETWEEN two signatures.

Step 3. Open the book FLAT between the two signatures. Cut straight down the centre of the open book. Make sure that you only cut through the spine and do not cut the pages. (Remember, you are not cutting the pages, you are just cutting through the glue and spine covering)

Step 4. It may take two or three cuts to fully cut through the spine of your book as you need to cut through the glue, spine and cover. Take your time and make sure you get a clean, smooth cut.

You will now have your book separated into two parts and are ready to protect, bind and cover each half using your BookSplits pack.

STEP 2 – HOW TO APPLY BOOKSPLITS COVERS
To protect, bind and cover each half of your book with your BookSplits pack - you will need:

• 2 front covers with a flexible spine flap – one for the front of each half of your book.
• 2 back covers with narrow peel-away strip – one for the back of each half of your book.

Step 1. Position one half of the book that you have split on a flat surface with the back of the book facing up and the spine away from you. Take one back cover and peel away the narrow strip. Align the cover with the left side of your book. Keep it approx. 0.5in/13mm away from the spine, and press firmly to adhere.

Step 2. Peel off the remaining liner and adhere cover to the back of your book, smoothing out any air bubbles.

Step 3. Trim the excess to fit book size.

Step 4. Now turn it over, and position your book with the front facing up and the spine away from you. Partially peel away the liner from the rigid part of the front sheet and align with the left side of your book, keeping it approx. 0.5in/13mm away from the spine. Press firmly to adhere. When you are satisfied that it is correctly positioned, peel away the remaining liner and press firmly to adhere, smoothing out any air bubbles.

Step 5. Peel the liner away from the flexible spine flap and wrap it securely around the spine of your book, smoothing out any air bubbles and overlapping the rigid cover on the back.

Step 6. Trim the excess to fit book size.

Step 7. Now repeat steps 1 to 5 for the second half of your book.
